APS Interview Questions Guide

Understanding APS Interviews: Keys to Success

APS interviews are designed to assess your capabilities against specific frameworks. Understanding these frameworks is crucial for your preparation.

Integrated Leadership System (ILS)

The ILS outlines capabilities expected at different APS levels, particularly for EL1 and EL2. It focuses on strategic thinking, achieving results, productive relationships, personal drive, and communication.

Learn about ILS

Work Level Standards (WLS)

WLS define the work value and responsibilities for each APS classification (APS1-EL2). Your answers should reflect the WLS for the role you're targeting, demonstrating you can perform at that level.

The STAR Method

The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is essential for structuring your responses to behavioural questions, providing clear, concise, and impactful examples of your experience.

How to use STAR

Effectively Using the STAR Method

Mastering the STAR method will help you provide compelling evidence of your skills and experience.

What is STAR?

S - Situation: Describe the context. What was the situation or challenge you faced?

T - Task: What was your specific role or task? What needed to be done?

A - Action: What actions did you take? Describe your specific steps and reasoning.

R - Result: What was the outcome? Quantify your achievements and highlight what you learned.

Tips for STAR Answers:

  • Be specific and concise.
  • Focus on *your* actions and contributions ("I" statements).
  • Choose relevant examples that showcase the required capabilities.
  • Quantify results whenever possible (e.g., "improved efficiency by 15%").
  • Reflect on what you learned or would do differently.
  • Practice your examples out loud.

Example Snippet (Action):

"To address the declining team morale (Situation), my task was to identify the root causes and implement solutions (Task). I initiated a series of confidential one-on-one discussions with each team member to gather feedback and understand their concerns. Based on this, I developed and proposed a flexible work arrangement pilot program to senior management (Action)..."
